How to Style Spanx Faux Leather Leggings

You may know the Spanx brand for it’s shapewear. But it has blossomed into so much more than just creating smooth lines under clothing. The company was started by Sara Blakely, a female entrepreneur who is also well known for her work in empowering and elevating women in business. She started the company over 20 years ago, when she was selling fax machines door-to-door.

She owned a cream pair of pants that she wouldn’t wear because she couldn’t find any undergarments that looked good under them. So, she started cutting the bottoms off her hosiery just to be able to wear the control-top. That’s how the idea of Spanx was born – to create shapewear that you couldn’t see under clothing. The Spanx we now know and love has much more than just shapewear, like leggings, workwear pants, jeans and activewear.

Choosing the Right Size

I’m normally a size 4 or 6 in denim jeans, depending on the brand and style, and wear a medium in Spanx leggings. If you’re in between sizes, I’d suggest sizing up as many people say they run on the smaller side. What’s nice about Spanx is they also come in varied lengths. I’m 5’5″ and get the regular length. On their website, Spanx suggests getting the petite length, if you’re under 5’4″. If you’re over 5’9″, they suggest getting the tall length. The faux leather leggings have a high-waist, so it gives a seamless look.

The black draped cardigan is by Spanx and has a mixture of materials including faux leather. It’s an elevated cardigan that can take you from the office to happy hour.

We’re seeing a lot of the houndstooth pattern right now, and love the pop of pattern in this look. I layered a silk cami underneath, but you could also do a basic tee or a dressier sweater. Complete the look with knee-high suede boots.

Bring your leather leggings to work. A white button down makes a great base for layering a blazer. Then layer a double-breasted blazer over the top. I love the lilac color of the blazer for an extra feminine look and feel. I finished the look with black booties that have a covered heel – perfect for wearing to the office.

Style with an Elevated Sweater

If you’re lounging at home, throw on your leather leggings and a basic crew neck tee. It’s comfortable and creates the perfect canvas for layering on other pieces, if you need to head out the door. Meeting friends for a casual patio lunch? Throw on a denim jacket and white sneakers for an effortless look.

An oversized sweater is a causal option to wear with your Spanx faux leather leggings. I like to size up one in a chunky sweater for a more oversized fit, especially if I’m wearing with leggings. I finished the look with crystal embellished booties. This would be a great look for a more casual holiday party or on a date.

Cardigans make a great layering piece to wear with your faux leather leggings. These two options above give you coverage on the backside and provide extra warmth on those colder days.

With the look on the left, I opted for a close-fitting turtleneck with a ruffle detail at the neckline. Then paired the look with dressy flats for an elevated look. On the right, I dressed the faux leather leggings down a bit with the Ugg boots. This would be a great look to run errands in.

Style with a Tunic Top

The color combo with the brown, black and white is chic and sophisticated. This white tunic top is perfect to wear with leggings, and I love the big pearl button on the front to give the shirt a dressier appearance. I added a velvet black hair tie for a fun addition to the look.

You could also style a silk or satin button down top with the faux leather leggings. These two outfits are perfect for that transitional weather between fall and winter.
