If you’ve read Strawberry Chic for any length of time, you know that I love Spanx anything. But my original love will always be their faux leather leggings. They’ve been a staple in my closet for years and have held up great. Faux leather leggings are such a fun change up to denim jeans and other pants throughout the fall and winter months. I love that their comfortable, warm and versatile to style. You can easily dress them up or down and will spice any outfit up instantly. Today, I’m sharing how to style Spanx faux leather leggings.
I also recently talked about Spanx faux suede leggings and shared ways to style those too!
How to Style Spanx Faux Leather Leggings
You may know the Spanx brand for it’s shapewear. But it has blossomed into so much more than just creating smooth lines under clothing. The company was started by Sara Blakely, a female entrepreneur who is also well known for her work in empowering and elevating women in business. She started the company over 21 years ago when she was selling fax machines door-to-door.
She owned a cream pair of pants that she wouldn’t wear because she couldn’t find any undergarments that looked good under them. So, she starting cutting the bottoms off her hosiery just to be able to wear the control-top. That’s how the idea of Spanx was born – to create shapewear that you couldn’t see under clothing. The Spanx we now know and love has much more than just shapewear, like leggings, workwear pants, jeans and activewear.
Choosing the Right Size
I’m normally a size 4 or 6 in denim jeans, depending on the brand and style, and wear a medium in Spanx leggings. If you’re in between sizes, I’d suggest sizing up as many people say they run on the smaller side. What’s nice about Spanx is they also come in varied lengths. I’m 5’5″ and get the regular length. On their website, Spanx suggests getting the petite length, if you’re under 5’4″. If you’re over 5’9″, they suggest getting the tall length. The faux leather leggings have a high-waist, so it gives a seamless look.

How to Dress Down Faux Leather Leggings
One of my go-to outfits in the fall and winter is pairing my faux leather leggings with a chunky sweater and boots. It’s an easy look to put together and can be worn to many different outings like going to dinner, holiday parties and casual Fridays at the office.
If the sweater is shorter like this Free People option, you can add a button down cotton shirt underneath for a little extra coverage. I finished the look with gorgeous chocolate brown, knee-high boots. I love how the brown pops against the black. Knee-high suede boots would pair well with this look too. Suede and leather are two great fabrics to wear throughout the cooler months, and I think they look beautiful when paired together with the same look.
Spanx also carries patent leather leggings. They’re a fun twist on the faux leather leggings and on-trend this season. I’m wearing the ruby color and can’t wait to wear them throughout the winter. I have them styled casually in the above two pictures – perfect for running errands or shopping on the weekends.
A few other ways to style faux leather leggings casually:
- Pair booties with a solid-colored tunic and a cardigan to grab lunch with friends
- Wear a plain, long-sleeve shirt and a mini sweater dress over the leggings with mules for a casual weekend look
- Style a graphic tee and a denim jacket with sneakers for a casual coffee date on the weekends

Holiday parties are just around the corner, and this outfit would be perfect to wear. The deep red of the pants against the crisp white lace top is a stunning combination. I finished the look with crystal embellished pumps for a pop of sparkle. This would also be a great outfit to wear for an evening out or to take on vacation with you throughout the winter. Just layer a wool coat over the top to complete the look.
Other ways to dress up faux leather leggings:
- Wear a wrap-style sequin top with the black leggings and suede pumps for another holiday party look
- Layer a boyfriend blazer and fitted turtleneck for a workwear look
- Style a v-neck bodysuit with a suede moto jacket for a fun date night look

Style with a Blazer

Bring your leather leggings to work. A sweater bodysuit makes a great base for layering a blazer because it won’t add any extra bulkiness. If you don’t love snapping your bodysuit, simply tuck the two pieces into your leggings. Works like a charm! Then layer a boyfriend-style blazer over the top. I love the pink color of the blazer for an extra feminine look and feel. I finished the look with classic black pumps that are a workwear staple.
Style with a Sequins Sweater

Here’s a fun, sophisticated holiday party look. I like mixing textures with the faux leather leggings. I chose this ultra soft sweater with a bit of crystal embellishment to jazz up the look a bit. If you want a little twist on your classic black pump, these crystal-embellished heels are it.
Style with a Denim Jacket

If you’re lounging at home, throw on your leather leggings and a basic crew neck tee. It’s comfortable and creates the perfect canvas for layering on other pieces, if you need to head out the door. Meeting friends for a casual patio lunch? Throw on a denim jacket and white sneakers for an effortless look.
Style with a Tunic

For all those Saturday morning errands like running to the grocery store or say, Target, these two outfits would be perfect. Pair a tunic or henley-style shirt with a flopping hat (because who wants to do their hair on Saturday morning). Finish the look with boots or mules and a crossbody bag. The only thing left is to grab your coffee and head out the door.
Style with an Oversized Sweater

This look was recreated using my Nordstrom Anniversary Sale lookbook where I styled over 150 outfits, using the only pieces from the sale. Get your copy to use as inspiration for all your winter wardrobe looks here.
An oversized sweater is a causal option to wear with your Spanx faux leather leggings. I like to size up one in a chunky sweater for a more oversized fit, especially if I’m wearing with leggings. I finished the look with knee-high boots. You could also wear with booties or mules. This would be a great look to wear to Thanksgiving dinner.
Style with a Ruana

You’ll rarely see me in this much black, but it’s so classic and chic. I paired my Spanx scoop neck bodysuit with a neutral-colored ruana. If I’m wearing something with a lot of pattern like this ruana, I like to keep my other pieces simple and solid-colored. I finished the look with black booties. This would be a great option to wear to a winery or out to dinner with your friends.
