10 Classic Wardrobe Basics Every Wardrobe Needs
Denim Jeans

Every woman needs a good pair of jeans that make her feel like a million bucks. Whether you’re team skinny, straight or flare, jeans that fit in all the right places will make you feel confident. The best part about denim jeans is that they can be dressed up or down. One of my favorite places to shop for denim jeans is Express. For me, most all of them run true to size and have a variety of fits, washes and lengths to fit different body types.
A pair of white, black and denim are great basic colors to style all year round. Yes, you can wear white after Labor Day, girl! I wrote all about that HERE. It might take you a few different try-ons to find the perfect jean for you, but I’m telling you once you find them, it’s like the heavens sing.

White Sneakers

Y’all know I love a great pair of heels or pretty flats. But when it comes to casual wear, there’s nothing more classic than white sneakers. They pair well with jeans, skirts and dresses and match any color in your wardrobe. Plus they’re comfortable, if you’re going to be walking while shopping, traveling etc. I rounded up my favorite white sneakers HERE. And also linked a few of my favorites down below too.

Bodysuits

A bodysuit is a great basic for layering different pieces throughout the year. When it’s winter, a long sleeve bodysuit works well, and in the summer, a tank-style is best. Now I have to tell you a little secret. The only way I’m wearing a bodysuit is with it unsnapped. I just tuck the two ends in and it still stays in place. The great thing about a bodysuit is you don’t have to worry about it untucking and looks very smooth without having to adjust it constantly.
If you don’t have a bodysuit, I recommend starting with a black or taupe/tan color to pair with a variety of outfits. They’re great layering under blazers, cardigans and kimonos or you can wear alone with a great pair of denim jeans or shorts. They also work really well with form-fitting skirts like pencil skirts to give that smooth, non-bulky look.

Blazers

Blazers are not only a great workwear staple, but they can be worn more casually with jeans/shorts and heels too. I rounded up my favorite blazers in this post HERE, and broke down the different styles. Whether you like the longer lengths or cropped lengths, big, gold buttons or more understated, there’s a blazer for you. They’re definitely an on-trend piece that won’t be going out of style anytime soon, and a great staple to invest in.

Slide Sandals

Another great basic pair of shoes to keep in your wardrobe are slide sandals. Like many of the other pieces included in this list, these can be dressed up or down too. I love this pair that are shown in the picture. Pair them with a maxi dress with a straw bag for a dinner outfit or pair your slides with white structured shorts and a bodysuit for a casual look on the weekends.

Solid Neutral Dresses

Dresses are my love language – especially neutral dresses. The reason I love a neutral dress so much is because you can really have fun with accessories and shoes to create endless looks with just one dress. Throughout the fall, I love pairing boots and wool hats with them. In the summer, I pair sneakers, flats or sandals with a fun straw hat and bag.
It’s also nice to have a more work-appropriate, neutral dress in your wardrobe to do the same thing – pair different shoes, accessories, blazers and cardigans with the dress to get multiple looks.

Basic Tees

Basic tees come in all different cuts and styles from tunic to cropped to crew neck and v-neck. I think having a basic fitted crew neck or v-neck and a tunic-style tee are both great to have. The crew neck to wear with jeans, skirts, shorts and trousers while a tunic-style is a legging-friendly option that provides good coverage for your back side.

Neutral Midi Skirts

A midi skirt is a great alternative to a dress. Midi length typically hits between your ankle and knee, giving you enough coverage for it to be work-appropriate too. This one I’m wearing in the picture above has a slight pattern to it but it’s neutral enough to be paired with many different colors. I also love the pleat detailing to give it a classic and feminine vibe. For the winter, opt for a sweater-like material and wear tights with boots to keep you warm during the cooler seasons. In the summer, opt for more lighter materials and pair the skirt with flats or sandals.

Denim Jacket

A denim jacket is a great layering piece for your wardrobe, especially in the spring and summer months. It’s one of those pieces that pairs well with a variety of outfits from dressy to casual. For a casual look, layer it over a basic tee, joggers and sneakers. For a more dressy way to style a denim jacket, you can layer it over a maxi dress and finish the look with a crossbody bag.

Denim Shorts

The last classic wardrobe basic is a great pair of denim shorts. My favorite pair are the Agolde Parker pair. They’re great quality and fit like a dream. Like other denim clothing, denim shorts come in a variety of fits, washes and styles. For more casual vibes, try a distressed pair in a light to medium wash. If you want to feel a little more dressed up while wearing denim shorts, try a darker wash with no distressing or fading.
