How to Style Matching Separate Sets

Thank you to Taylor Swift for making matching separate sets a little less grandma and completely cool again. There is something about a matching set that can be so elegant and chic. But one of the reasons I love picking up a matching set is the endless styling options. If you’ve been wondering how to style matching separate sets multiple ways, this post is for you!

A matching separate set is a set with two pieces that match each other. It usually has the same colors fabric and pattern. They can be worn together to look like a dress or jumpsuit. However, some have a cropped top to them and will show just a little strip of skin above your belly button. However, just because they are matching doesn’t mean you always have to wear them together. You can easily grab a piece from a matching separate set and pair it with another item in your wardrobe to create a look for work, weekend and everything in between!

matching set from Rachel Parcell

This matching set is from Rachel Parcell’s new line, summer dreams! It comes in both a light pink and a white. I’m wearing my normal size small with a 9 month bump, so if you’re between sizes you’ll have plenty of room to soze down. The top is smocked and very stretchy while the skirt is flowy and forgiving. This is one of the best matching sets I’ve seen in such a long time. I love that the skirt is stretchy enough to pull up so that you don’t have to show your mid-drift. You can wear it on it’s own with heels or sandals. Or you can pair it with a denim jacket and sneakers for a more casual look. Going into the office? Add heels and a blazer for an easy professional look. And if you are wanting a elevated yet casual look, tie up a pink button down or knot a sweater or tee and pair with a block heel.

This dainty green floral print set is giving me retro vibes and I’m here for it. Although it may seem like a challenge to style a crop top multiple ways, all you need is a great high waisted bottom and some layering to quickly carry this from weekend to work. When paired with a high waisted black pant, blazer and heel, this makes for the perfect layering blouse. You can also take the top and pair it with high waisted mom shorts and sandals for a more casual vibe.

If you are looking to style the skirt multiple ways, pair it with a sweet crochet top for a date night look. I love the texture of this one. Add a sandal for summer or a heel to really take it up a notch. If you are going for a casual, yet elevated feel, pair the skirt with a graphic tee. I suggest knotting the front of a light colored graphic tee so that it doesn’t overpower the floral pattern. Layer a denim jacket over the top and you’re ready for a casual lunch, running errands or just grabbing the kids from school.

pink summer-time matching set

This pink, summer-time matching set is just so sweet. You know I can’t resist a good pink look. While I love this set, I also love how easily it pair with other items. From white pants and a cardigan for work to denim mom shorts for the weekend. Just because these are high waisted shorts, doesn’t mean you can’t treat them as mid rise shorts. Instead of tucking your shirt in, have it go over the top, like this tie top shirts and give the illusion of mid rise shorts. If you a travel day on the books, I would recommend the comfy version of this look. Add a sweatshirt and sneakers if you’re going to be doing a long drive for extra comfort.

This matching set is similar to the one I styled above, but the fabric is a little more structured. I love that this gives it a slightly more dressy feel, while also having the ability to work for an everyday look. I actually took two other pieces from other matching sets and paired them with this one. The crisp white is so easy to pair with a fun color or a printed skirt. If you’re wanting to wear it to work and don’t want to layer a blazer over the top, opt for a sweater instead. Simply tuck the front in and add an espadrille or wedge heel.

sweater set styled multiple ways

I styled a sweater set similar to this one in the fall and you all loved it! It was easily one of my most worn sets, purely because it felt a lot like pajamas, just a little more chic. I love that you can easily dress this look up or down. You can pair it with a tee and denim jacket for a work from home day or add a heel and blouse when you are going into the office. The sweater set is great for travel days when you’re going to be on a chilly plain ride or you can pair with high rise dress pants for an easy work wear look!

Another type of my favorite matching separate set, is a lounge wear set. I’ve been living in these while I’m working from home. They are great because, let’s be honest, they feel like pajamas but you can wear them out in public with some white sneakers and no one will judge you.
