Turtlenecks are one of the most underrated pieces of clothing for your fall and winter wardrobe. They serve a dual purpose by keeping you extra warm on the coldest of days. Plus, they instantly elevate your look and make your outfits look more creative and put together. Turtlenecks come in a variety of silhouettes. So it’s easy to find a fit you enjoy wearing. Today, I’m sharing how to style a turtleneck.
How to Style a Turtleneck
Over this past fall and winter, I’ve found a variety of turtlenecks with feminine details, luxurious fabrics and fun ways to style them. Below are a few tips with how to style a turtleneck to create cozy winter outfits.
Use as a Base Layer
When you’re using a turtleneck as a base layer, you likely want one that fits close to the body. That way, it’s not adding any extra bulk underneath whatever you’re layering on top of the turtleneck.
A few pieces of clothing I like to layer on top of my turtlenecks are a: denim jacket, cardigan, blazer, poncho/ruana, leather jacket, trench coat or dress.
If you’re turtleneck is only going to be peeking through around your neckline, you might consider one that has a fun detail like a ruffle.
Add a Pop of Color
A simple way to add a pop of color is to incorporate it with your turtleneck. This is especially true if you’re layering with a turtleneck. Wear a soft pink turtleneck underneath a blazer for the workplace with a white blazer and light brown pants. This is a great option to wear in the spring.
You can add a darker tone to your look, if it’s in the fall and winter. Layer a rich burgundy turtleneck underneath a ruana. Then, complete the look with denim jeans and ankle boots for a casual look.
Layer Over Your Favorite Pieces
Another way to wear a turtleneck is to actually layer them over something else. Typically when you’re laying a turtleneck over something, like a jumpsuit or a dress, you want it to be an oversized turtleneck.
This is a great way to add more versatility to dresses and jumpsuits in the colder seasons. Simply add a chunky turtleneck over the top. You can add a belt to your natural waistline and tuck the sweater into the belt and pull it out a bit. That way, it adds a bit of structure to your waist.

Chunky White Turtleneck with a Midi Skirt

This white turtleneck outfit was styled accidentally. Because I have a shorter torso, this skirt was hitting a bit odd on my waist. So instead of pairing a fitted turtleneck with this look, I opted for a more oversized sweater, and it worked perfectly. It covers up the waistline, and I simply front tucked the sweater into the skirt. You could also pair this white sweater with skinny jeans or straight jeans for a casual look to wear to lunch.
Turtleneck Styled with a Blazer

A blazer turtleneck outfit is a staple look to add to your workwear rotation. Turtlenecks work well layered underneath a blazer during the colder months. A more fitted turtleneck or a turtleneck bodysuit work the best, so the blazer lays nicely over the top.

Because this sheer turtleneck is fitted, the flare jeans provide a nice balance to the overall look. Complete the outfit with a leather jacket for an edgy vibe.
