Sweater dresses are one of my favorite (if not my favorite) thing to wear throughout the cooler months of the year. They’re super versatile when it comes to styling them and can wear a sweater dress with almost anything. From booties to knee-high boots to sneakers, they can be dressed up or down for a variety of occasions. So today, I’m sharing fashionable ways with how to style a sweater dress with tights and booties.
How to Style a Sweater Dress with Tights and Booties
Consider the Material of Your Tights
Tights come in a variety of materials and colors. When choosing a pair of tights to go with your sweater dress and boots outfit combo, you want to consider the weather first. Is it super cold or mild?
If it’s cold, consider wearing a tight that’s more opaque with a heavier material. You could even wear faux black leather leggings instead of tights, if you need that extra layer and warmth.
If it’s mild, wear tights that are more sheer. That way, you don’t get too hot.
Decide On the Color of Your Bootie
Next, decide on the color of your bootie when you wear a sweater dress. Because you’re styling three different pieces: your sweater dress, boots and tights, you want to be sure the three compliment each other.
Your two options would be to create a monochromatic look, or each of the colors be different but still create a beautiful appearance.
An example of a monochromatic look is a black sweater dress with black tights and black booties.
Alternatively, you could also choose complimentary colors and have each piece be different. For example, a cream sweater dress with boots in the brown/tan family and cream tights.
Find Out the Dress Code
When wearing your sweater dress outfit, consider how dressy or casual the event you’re wearing the look to is. Is it a casual dinner out with friends? Then an oversize sweater dress with casual boots is a great option.
Is it a dressier event for work, holiday party or other more elevated event? Consider wearing more elevated sweater dress styles that are fitted with feminine details like a ruffle or scalloped detail.
A pair of black suede booties would complement a dressier look well.
Consider the Heel Height and Style of Your Bootie
The final tip when styling a sweater dress with tights and booties is to consider the heel height and style of your boot.
If you’re wanting a more casual look, a block heel with a more round toe gives a casual vibe. Keep the heel height to a minimum, if you’re going to be doing a lot of walking or on your feet often throughout the day. You may even consider combat boots.
For a more elevated, dressy look, a skinnier heel looks more elevated than a chunky option. A heel that’s covered with the same material of your boot also looks more elegant compared to a heel that has a “wooden” look.
5 Outfits with a Sweater Dress Tights and Booties
Sleeveless Sweater Dress Layered Over a Long Sleeve Shirt

The first outfit idea combines a long sleeve tee with a sleeveless sweater dress. This is a great way to incorporate a sleeveless sweater dress into your winter wardrobe. Simply layer a long sleeve t-shirt underneath the dress. I paired a Western-inspired bootie with the look. A pair of cream or sheer brown tights would look adorable with this color combination.
Turtleneck Sweater Dress with White Booties

The next outift idea combines a turtleneck sweater dress with ankle boots in white. A white bootie is a little unexpected and an on-trend color to wear. I have a blog post talking about how to wear a sweater dress with ankle boots HERE.
This look is a bit more casual and the perfect look to wear to a brunch or wedding/baby shower, during the cooler months of the year. Just add tights to give your legs a little extra coverage, and you’re good to go.
Black Sweater Dress with Black Boots

This monochromatic black outfit is a bit more elevated for those dressier occasions. You could wear this as a business casual look or on your next dinner date. This dress has a super flattering fit with the pleated detail throughout the skirt.
In this photo, I have on over-the-knee boots with black tights. You could even do thigh high boots for the ultimate coverage for your legs. But you could trade those for a black bootie too.
If you’re going for a dressier look, opt for a bootie that has a covered heel. A bootie with a skinnier heel will give you the most elevated look.
Henley Sweater Dress with Western-Inspired Boots
Shop the Look
This henley dress is one of my favorite sweater dresses. It’s casual and easy to wear, and love the button detail at the top. I opted to pair mine with Western-inspired booties, but you could also pair this dress with a Chelsea boot or other ankle boots too in a cream or black, if you get this color of henley dress.
It would be super fun to pair this look with a patterned tight to give a little interest and a fun factor!
Balloon Sleeve Sweater Dress with Knee-High Boots
Shop the Look
The last look in this roundup is another great dressy look featuring a sweater dress and knee-high boots. Of course you could also add a pair of booties instead of the knee-high boots. It’s all in what you prefer to wear! The balloon sleeves and ribbed waist gives this dress a modern and elegant twist to wear to the office.
