The holidays are a popular time to get engaged. Because of that, you might find yourself being invited to a wedding or two (or 10) this year. Depending on the couple’s style and preference, you might even notice a wedding guest attire preference on the invite. If you’re scratching your head wondering what exactly black-tie or semi-formal means, then keep reading because I’m breaking it all down for you. Here’s your ultimate guide to wedding dress codes.

Breakout the gowns and the tuxes because it’s a time to get gussied up! Black-tie is the most formal type of attire for a wedding. If it says black-tie attire, that typically means it will be a more traditional wedding and reception. For men, this means a tuxedo is generally expected. If not, a formal dark suit and shoes will do just fine. For the ladies, a long gown that’s more on the modest side is preferred. What’s fun about black-tie is that you can get away with fun details like sequins, lace, silk, big bows, crystal embellishments, and other fun additions to your look.

If the invitation says that it’s black-tie preferred, this means that you don’t necessarily have to wear a long dress. It just needs to be more formal-looking than your usual cocktail dress.

Below is a picture of Tim and I at a black-tie wedding. I think y’all liked it too because it was a bestseller. I loved the simplicity of it with the fun detail of the oversized bow at the shoulder. I finished the look with crystal-embellished pumps that I break out on special occasions.

Semi-formal attire can get kind of confusing. Thankfully this dress code doesn’t require a tux. A suit and leather shoes with a tie works well for men. If it’s fall or winter, opt for deeper colors. If it’s summer or spring, they can wear a lighter-toned suit.

For semi-formal, it’s good to consider where the wedding is going to take place and the weather. If it’s going to be in a ballroom during the winter, a long dress is perfectly acceptable. But it can have fun and sassy details, like a high-slit and more understated fabrics compared to black-tie dress. If the wedding is in a garden, you can opt for a midi-length or knee-length dress made of luxurious fabrics like silk or lace. You could also do a high-low hemline for a pretty flowy effect. Don’t be afraid to play with ruffles and bows, if that’s your style too! For the shoes, a pump or high-heeled sandal are two great options to wear with your dress.

This silk high-low wrap dress is what I’m planning to wear for a beach wedding we have coming up this year. It’s light and love the color for a spring wedding. It has adjustable straps, and I’m wearing a size medium.

Cocktail attire is the most common dress code for a wedding. It’s basically in the middle of what you would wear to a nice dinner and to a black-tie event. Generally it’s a knee-length to midi length dress that looks elegant and sophisticated but not so much so that you look like you’re about to go meet the Queen. If it’s a long dress, it should be flowy with a more casual fabric. You want to stay away from anything that’s too tight or short. You’re going for understated elegance. You could also do an elevated jumpsuit or dress suit if you prefer pants over a dress.

Though this dress code is more relaxed than the last two, it still means no jeans or sandals. For the guys, it’s generally a suit or sport coat and nice pair of dress pants with leather shoes and a tie.

The dress I’m wearing below is a flowy, full-length dress, but the material and the pattern look more casual than dressy. The sheer sleeves add to the elegant yet laid-back vibe, and love that it’s nursing-friendly.

When it comes to casual weddings, they’re typically held on the beach or outdoors. Depending on the time of year, you can wear a dress with casual fabric and prints – think sundress vibes. You can pair nice sandals or wedges with your dress, but avoid wearing casual sandals or sneakers.

For the guys, a collared shirt and khakis is appropriate. If it’s chilly a sport coat is acceptable to wear with nice casual shoes or boat shoes.

This flowy tiered dress is the perfect mix of casual and elegant. The smocking gives it a more casual vibe and paired it with slip-on sandals.

If you’re still unsure what the most appropriate thing would be to wear to a friend or family member’s wedding, then asking a bridesmaid or the mother of the bride would be acceptable.
