A leather skirt is a timeless piece (whether real or faux leather) that I don’t see going out of style any time soon. I try to balance purchasing pieces that are timeless and on-trend, so that I can have a good mixture of both in my wardrobe. I’ve been wearing leather skirts for years and love how they make you feel stylish and sassy. You can wear them throughout the year, but usually find myself reaching for them more in the fall and winter. Today, I’m sharing tips on how to wear a leather skirt in winter.

If you’ve been feeling kind of ho-hum about your style, I recently blogged about how to get out of a style rut HERE.

How to Wear a Leather Skirt in Winter

Leather skirts can be found anywhere from couture to high-street fashion stores. You’ll most likely find real leather skirts in high-end retailers. But you can find faux leather skirts in more high-street fashion stores like Abercrombie, Lulus and Petal and Pup.

Because a leather skirt doesn’t cover the legs, sometimes some are hesitant to wear leather skirts in winter. But I have some tips to help keep you warm and cozy, yet looking stylish by wearing a leather mini skirt throughout the winter.

Wear Over-the-Knee or Knee-High Boots

One of the best ways to wear leather skirts is to wear over-the-knee or knee-high boots. This naturally gives your legs a little extra coverage, and creates an on-trend look. Depending on the look your going for, you could wear a boot with a high heel to create a more dressy look. To add a bit of texture, wear a boot made of suede. The suede against the faux leather is a fall and winter material duo that’s not to be missed wearing!

Layer a Long Coat Over the Top

The next tip is to layer a long coat over the top of your outfit. To keep your legs warm, a wool coat is a super warm and stunning option to incorporate into your outfit. I rounded up all my favorite camel coats in this POST HERE. If it’s more mild weather, you could also layer a trench coat over your outfit too.

Pair with Tights

The third tip is to wear tights underneath your skirt. I wasn’t always a big fan of tights, but recently been wanting to incorporate them more into my outfits. You can buy tights in a variety of colors, with many of them having a control top to keep everything seamless with your leather skirt outfits.

Wear a Leather Midi Skirt Instead of Mini

Because faux leather has become a popular material, there are plenty of leather midi skirt options too. Typically, you’ll find that leather midi skirts are pencil skirts. But you can find some a-line silhouettes too. Pencil skirts are ultra figure-flattering and perfect to wear to the office too. Leather pencil skirts are a workwear wardrobe essential.

Choose the Right Tops for Tucking

If you’re going to tuck your top into your skirt, you want to make sure it’s a thinner material or a bodysuit. Because leather skirts typically fit close to the body, anything that tucks into it has a tendency to look lumpy if it’s a thicker material. So you want to stick to bodysuits, thin sweaters or crop top silhouettes.

Wear Chunky Sweaters for a Casual Look

To dress your leather skirt down, style a chunky sweater with it. To give the overall outfit more structure, you can simply front tuck the very end of the sweater into the skirt.

Dress It Up with a Blazer

To dress up your leather skirt, pair a blazer with the look. If you’re wearing a mini length, try a cropped blazer. A regular length blazer looks beautiful with a midi skirt. Black leather skirt outfits tend to look more dressy too. The color black is sophisticated and comes off as more dressy in most cases. A fun date night look is the perfect occasion to wear a black mini skirt.

You can either tuck in the very ends of the sweater all the way around the skirt. Or you can tuck the end of the sweater into your bra and pull the sweater down until it hits the top of your skirt.

Wool coats are a wardrobe staple to have for the winter months. They pair beautifully with a faux leather skirt and provide great coverage to your legs on the coldest of days throughout the winter. I paired knee-high boots with my wool coat to keep my ankles and calves covered.

Over-the-knee boots are a great way to give your legs the extra coverage without having to wear tights. You can see most of my leg is covered with this style of boot on. The suede boots against the leather is a beautiful texture variation, and opted to keep the sweater casual.

I mentioned pairing your skirt with high-profile ankle boots earlier in the post, and these are a great example of those. They come up a bit higher on the leg. This sweater is a crop top silhouette with a feminine bow detail on the front. The crop top is a great option, if you don’t want to worry about tucking the top into your skirt or don’t want to wear a bodysuit either.

Another fun texture variation to add to your faux leather outfit is a faux fur vest or jacket. This faux fur jacket from Abercrombie is perfect to wear for date night, a holiday party or a winter wedding. The faux fur vest pictured is sold out, but found a similar one linked above in black to mix and match with black leather skirt outfits.
